Paul Ballentyne started Moana Road (then ‘Moana Road Art') in 2008. Prior to this Paul was an Economics teacher at Wellington College before moving into property development.
When the recession hit the property market in 2008, Paul went back to teaching but also bought himself a camera. A surfer of nearly three decades, Paul knew where some of the most stunning and untouched places in NZ were and so he began photographing them.
Beautiful scenery shots, as well as unique ‘Kiwiana’ subject matter, proved very popular and so Paul began selling his images at many outdoor markets all over New Zealand. Having that face time with his
customers also proved invaluable as Paul was able to really connect with and establish what people wanted more of.
Following this, Paul opened a few ‘pop-up’ shops in Wellington, Porirua, Palmerston North and Auckland. These temporary retail stores acted as one-off art galleries showcasing Pauls photography, as well as other NZ artists.
In 2011, Paul opened the last of the pop-up shops for Christmas before focusing fully on wholesaling.
Paul is passionate about sharing the beauty and culture of his beloved NZ and today Moana Rd proudly supplies retailers up and down the length of Aotearoa, as well as 10 countries overseas.
